The Health of Louisiana

It’s no secret that Louisiana ranks dead-last when it comes to healthy living. According to America’s Health Rankings 2023 annual report, our state faces significant challenges in various areas of health. The data reveals some of the biggest factors contributing to Louisiana’s health score, including:

1. Obesity Epidemic

Unfortunately, Louisiana has the one of the highest obesity rates in the nation, affecting both adults and children. According to the Louisiana Department of Health, one in four adults in Louisiana are considered to be obese. This epidemic is linked to lifestyle and dietary choices, and significantly impacts overall health.

2. Chronic Disease Prevalence

The state contends with high rates of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension. These conditions place a considerable burden on both individuals and the healthcare system.

3. Limited Access to Healthcare

Disparities in healthcare access is very much so present, particularly in rural areas. Many Louisianans face challenges in obtaining affordable medical care, impacting preventive measures and early interventions. Consequently, this leads to an overall decline in health status.

The Good News

The good news is that, in the same health report, Louisiana has been identified as the state with the highest opportunity for improvement. As a Louisiana-based registered dietitian (RD), I’m confident that residents can start making changes TODAY to improve their health.

Today, I’m here to show that some of the things that you are already eating CAN have a positive impact on your health. We know creating a healthy lifestyle can seem daunting, but LANA is here to provide support you need. When it comes to helping our patients, we encourage them to start with the foods that are already apart of their routine, making living healthy lifestyle feel more attainable.

Healthy Louisiana Foods You Already Eat

There are plenty of healthy Louisiana foods that you may already be eating, even daily! One of the things I love about Louisiana is the tradition of home-cooked meals. The ability for many of us to prepare our own meals, as opposed to dining out, gives us a unique advantage. Let’s dive into my top three favorite healthy Louisiana foods that residents are already incorporating into their meals:

The Holy Trinity

If you’re not already familiar (though chances are you are), the holy trinity is a classic Louisiana combination of onions, green bell peppers, and celery, and is the base for countless dishes across the state.

What some might not realize is that this mix is essentially providing servings of vegetables! Incorporating veggies into your meals adds a wealth of essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber.

Onions

Beyond adding a ton of flavor to your meals, onions are rich in antioxidants, including quercetin, which has anti-inflammatory properties. They also provide vitamin C, aiding immune health, and fiber for digestive health.

Green bell peppers

These not only contribute to the trinity’s bright green color but also bring a hefty dose of vitamin A and C. These vitamins play a big role in your vision, skin health, and overall immunity.

Celery

Apart from providing a satisfying crunch, celery is a low-calorie vegetable packed with vitamins K and C. It also contains antioxidants and is known for its hydrating properties.

Incorporating the holy trinity into your meals is not just about taste; it’s a nutrient-packed addition to your diet. You can chop these vegetables yourself, following the classic 2:1:1 ratio, or opt for convenience with a frozen pre-chopped blend, such as Guidry’s Fresh Cuts Creole Seasoning.

Seafood

Did you know that seafood is not only delicious but it’s also an excellent source of protein? Louisiana residents incorporate seafood in a myriad of dishes, and we’re lucky to have the Gulf of Mexico in our own backyard as our fresh seafood source!

Wild caught seafood, like this Louisiana Select Wild Caught Gulf Shrimp, is packed with benefits including:

High-quality protein source

Seafood, including shrimp, is a fantastic source of high-quality protein, essential for muscle repair, immune function, and overall well-being.

Rich in nutrients

Shrimp is not only protein-packed but also rich in essential nutrients like selenium, vitamin B12, and phosphorus, supporting various bodily functions, from metabolism to bone health.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Wild-caught seafood, like gulf shrimp, is a superior source of omega-3 fatty acids, crucial for heart health, brain function, and reducing inflammation.

Wild-Caught vs Farmed Seafood

Choosing wild-caught seafood ensures a more natural diet for the animals and often results in a better nutritional profile. Wild-caught shrimp, in particular, tend to have higher levels of omega-3s and lower levels of potentially harmful contaminants than their farmed counterparts.

By opting for wild-caught, you not only support the state of Louisiana and sustainable fishing practices but also maximize the health benefits of your seafood choices.

Healthy ways to use shrimp:

One of the simplest and healthiest ways to prepare shrimp is by pan-frying them in a light layer of avocado oil and your favorite seafood seasoning. Serve your shrimps on a bed of wild rice and one of our favorite veggie sides, spicy roasted cauliflower.

Beans

Beans, beans… Yup, you know the rest! Beans are nutritional powerhouses, packing a high amount of resistant starch, a beneficial form of fiber that is fantastic for promoting gut health, stabilizing blood sugar levels, and contributing to lower cholesterol.

Pairing beans with rice is a simple yet powerful duo, and is a traditional dish found all across Louisiana. This dish not only satisfies the taste buds but also provides a well-rounded source of essential amino acids from protein, and fiber for digestive health.

Camellia Beans are local to Louisiana and are the perfect addition to a healthy diet.
